Klout…Do I Care?

Apparently, I do care that Klout has recently revamped the way they rank profiles. I went from a healthy 72 down to a score of 57. What changed? I have no idea and neither do any of my colleagues. Many of their rankings fell as drastically as mine and no one at Klout is really sharing what changed.

All I know about the way they rank is what I read on their website…

The Klout Score measures influence based on your ability to drive action. Every time you create content or engage you influence others.

The Klout Score uses data from social networks in order to measure:

True Reach:

  • How many people you influence

Amplification:

  • How much you influence them

Network Impact:

  • The influence of your network

But what does this vague bit of information mean? What ‘data’ are they using? How do I go from a score of 72 down to 57? I’m tempted to ditch Klout and move to a program that is based less on the vague whim of a company to one that might actually divulge how it ranks a person’s actual clout within my social media sites.

I read and write about social media consistently, every day on Facebook and Twitter, as well as many other sites. I teach social media basics to clients and  have a group of colleagues whereby we act as each other’s advisor on best practices in the internet and social media industry. I understand that I am not anywhere near the status of Mari Smith, Brian Solis or Pete Cashmore, but I do know what I’m talking about and I know I influence a number of people not only in my local circles, but also across the nation and elsewhere.

I guess I should just chalk it up to another fad and move on. I must be a hopeless romantic as I still have hope. I keep hoping I’ll figure out how Klout ranks their users so it’s not such a mystery, not only for me, but their other users, too.

Still not sure how Klout scores you, check out this blog post and maybe this will shed more light on this subject for you.

With gratitude,
Michelle Ulrich
